WoW: Forever has no realms — you pick a ruleset, not a server. At character creation you choose Normal (PvP only by mutual consent), PvP (open faction combat with Horde/Alliance balance systems), Roleplaying, or Hardcore (added after launch, enclosed, one life). Each ruleset is its own large ecosystem, you cannot group across rulesets, and collections plus Legacy Points are shared account-wide except with Hardcore.

The four rulesets at a glance

  • No cross-ruleset play. A Normal character and a PvP character cannot group, trade or raid together. Pick the ruleset your friends are on.
  • Factions stay separate. Realmless does not mean cross-faction. Horde and Alliance remain two sides in every ruleset.
  • Not one giant world. Blizzard describes each ruleset as a large ecosystem rather than a single mega-realm. How many ecosystems each ruleset runs per region has not been published.
  • Language, not server, sorts you. You set a language preference and are placed with players who share it.
  • Names are two-part and unique per region. A Main Name plus a Secondary Name (for example "Ana Forever"). Early reservation runs October 27 – November 3 with any upgrade pack, up to three characters.

Does "realmless" mean I lose my realm community?

Not in the way people fear. Your world is still bounded — the ruleset, the faction and the language filter decide who you actually meet. What disappears is the old problem of rolling on a server that empties out six months later, or logging in to find your realm locked with a queue while a friend's is dead. Everyone on your ruleset shares the same pool.

Blizzard has not said whether realm-identity features like server-wide chat or first-kill boards exist per ecosystem. Treat that as unknown until the Q&A on September 17 or the beta (September 17 – October 21, capped at level 30) reveals it.

Can I move a character between rulesets?

The only published transfer is the Hardcore exit. When a Hardcore character dies, it can move to another ruleset, including PvP, and keep playing. Blizzard has not announced transfers between Normal, PvP and Roleplaying, paid or free. If switching matters to you, choose carefully at creation — or roll a second character, since Legacy Points earned on one ruleset spend on your alts in the others.

What is the PvP ruleset actually like?

Open world faction combat with balance systems modelled on Season of Discovery, so one side should not steamroll a zone unopposed. The original battlegrounds return, joined by The Darkspear Islands — a 15v15 map in the style of Eye of the Storm with Arathi Basin-style capture points. The Honor system has been reworked, but Blizzard has not published the numbers, and rank rewards are also part of the Legacy Challenges (Earning PvP Ranks is one of the six categories). Battlegrounds are playable on every ruleset; only open-world combat rules differ.

What do we know about Hardcore in Forever?

Three things, and only three: it arrives after launch, it is an enclosed ruleset (your Hardcore collections and Legacy Points flow out to the other rulesets, but nothing flows in), and a dead character can transfer out rather than being deleted. Death rules, whether trading or grouping is restricted, and the release date were not part of the announcement. Anything more specific you read right now is a guess.

If you would rather skip the grind and get straight to the parts you enjoy, PewPewShop offers Forever pre-orders handled by vetted human players: leveling 1–30 from EUR 13, Drowned City dungeon runs from EUR 16, and battleground wins (WSG / AB / AV) from EUR 13 — with a full 1–60 quoted at two to three weeks from launch day.
